LNL - Tower Hamlets

2017

At a Council meeting on 18th January Tower Hamlets became the latest Authority to approve a Late Night Levy (LNL) scheme.  We have previously reported on the Council’s LNL consultation.

The LNL which will effect premises operating between midnight and 6am (subject to the following exemptions) will take effect on 1st June 2017.

The following premises would be exempt from the levy:

  • Premises with overnight accommodation
  • Theatres and Cinemas
  • Bingo Halls
  • Community Amateur Sports Clubs
  • Community premises
  • Premises opening past midnight for New Years Eve only

The LNL will apply across the Authority Area and will equate to additional sums of between £299 to £4,440 for effected premises.

Income from the LNL, less collection costs, will be allocated through the Community Safety Partnership and Members of the Best Bar None Scheme shall be eligible to receive a 30% reduction from the levy.  It is hoped that this will drive participation in the BBN scheme in the Authority Area.

Premises will be entitled to make a minor variation application to reduce their hours in order to avoid the LNL prior to the implementation.  Such applications are exempt from the usual £89 application fee associated with such applications.

If you operate premises in the Tower Hamlets area and are unclear as to the impact of this decision on your business, please do not hesitate to contact one of our team.
